What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. BMI is a useful tool for identifying whether a person is underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese, which can help to assess their risk for certain health conditions.

Why BMI Matters
  • Heart Disease: Excess weight can increase the risk of heart disease by raising blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
  • Diabetes: Being overweight is a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes.
  • Cancer: Certain types of cancer are more common in people who are overweight or obese.
  • Respiratory Problems: Excess weight can lead to sleep apnea and other respiratory issues.
  • Joint Problems: Being overweight can strain joints, leading to conditions like osteoarthritis.
The Role of Healthy Eating
  • Variety: Include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats in your diet.
  • Portion Control: Be mindful of portion sizes to avoid overeating.
  • Limit Unhealthy Foods: Reduce the intake of processed foods, sugary drinks, and high-fat, high-sugar snacks.
BMI Limitations

BMI is not the most reliable measure of whether your weight is in a healthy range. It doesn't take into account important factors like age, gender, and body composition (fat, muscle, and bone).

BMI may not be accurate for:

  • Some ethnic groups including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples, and people of Asian/South Asian descent
  • Women who are pregnant
  • People 19 years of age or younger
  • Athletes or people with a lot of muscle
  • People with conditions affecting fluid levels (e.g., heart failure)
